Production Design: Two perspectives

Two Production Designers Reflect on Practice, Process, Teaching and Artistic Research

Production designers Jette Lehmann and Jørgen Stangebye Larsen represent different generations, experiences and perspectives in a conversation about the role and practice of production design today.

Moderated by writer and director Gunhild Enger, the conversation will draw on their recent work, including Lehmann’s production design for Joshua Oppenheimer’s The End and Larsen’s production design for Joachim Trier’s Sentimental Value, as well as examples from other films and projects. Through these works, they will explore how production designers approach a project, develop cinematic worlds, collaborate with directors and other creative departments, and navigate the artistic and practical realities of film production.

The masterclass will take a closer look at how production design can be taught, communicated and researched. Lehmann will draw on her experience as a production designer and lecturer at the National Film School of Denmark, while Larsen will share insights from his ongoing artistic research at the Norwegian Film School, where his PhD project explores production design and new approaches to filmmaking.

Rather than presenting a single, definitive method, the masterclass brings together two perspectives on the field and reflects on how production design is practised today, how it is evolving, and how new generations of production designers can continue to develop the discipline.

The masterclass will be held in English and structured around a dialogue, complemented by film clips, images and other visual material from their work. There will be opportunities throughout for questions and discussion with the audience.
