In a world where leadership requires an understanding of inclusion and diversity, the film industry must also be aware of its historical biases. "Steps Towards Utopia - Addressing Racism and Inclusion in Film Production" is an immersive event that seeks to educate, enlighten, and empower individuals within the film community to recognize and address racism, representation issues, and exclusionary practices.
The course takes place on The National Film School of Denmark on the 28th of November and 2nd of December.
On the first day, we will delve into the nuanced concepts of systemic and institutional racism. We will explore how these deep-rooted issues manifest in the film industry, perpetuating harmful tropes and inadequate representation. Participants will gain a clear understanding of why well-intentioned responses like 'colour-blindness' can actually hinder progress and perpetuate harmful practices. Through engaging discussions, you will be equipped with the knowledge and tools needed to identify discrimination in all its forms.
The second day is dedicated to practical solutions and building a comprehensive toolkit for fostering equality and equity in filmmaking. Participants will learn best practices for promoting inclusion in both the production and exhibition phases of filmmaking. We will explore specific terms and language around inclusion and racism to enhance communication and understanding within the industry. Attendees will leave with actionable strategies to embed inclusion seamlessly into their existing filmmaking practices.
"Steps Towards Utopia" welcomes filmmakers, producers, directors, actors, film exhibitors, film festival organizers, and anyone passionate about creating a more inclusive and anti-racist film industry. Whether you are an industry veteran or a newcomer, this event is designed to inspire change and equip you with the necessary tools to make a difference.
